Importance The article addresses rank distribution of the subjects of the Russian Federation as objects of State management and monitoring, taking into account the results of structural analysis of their economic systems and changing socio-economic situation. Objectives We focus on determining the content and advantages of applying the method of structural-and-rank analysis of the subjects of the Russian Federation with the diagnostics of condition of their economic systems and the place they occupy in the analyzed population, taking into account the non-linearity of distribution over the rank parameter. Methods The study employs indicators of the theory of statistics coordination, correlation of methods of structural and rank analysis, typological grouping, nonlinear distribution, effective rank method, and a systems approach. Results We developed our own algorithm to perform a structural-and-rank analysis, having its own logic and sequence of implementation. The method of structural analysis is fundamental; is rests on cross-cutting comparison of elements of gross value added, and further scaling and classifying the analyzed objects by the level of economic systems' development. The developed method can be considered as a supplement to the methodology of economic analysis. It assesses the results of the State structural economic policy implementation enabling to reliably determine the condition and results of socio-economic development of analyzed systems of any type and scale. Conclusions Distributing the objects of ranking into separate types based on the results of structural analysis makes the ranking results more accurate while using this approach in the ratings of national and international organizations.
