Importance The article discusses the issues of private charitable works, namely, such a particular form as volunteering.
Objectives The article aims to identify the characteristics of people who are inclined to assist those in need and determine the factors that increase motivation to participate in private or public philanthropy.
Methods For modelling the likelihood of respondents' participation in volunteer activities, I used logit and probit regressions.
Results The article identifies factors influencing the involvement of respondents in volunteer activities. The article clarifies that religion and participation in public and political activities do not have a significant impact on the likelihood of participation in volunteer activities.
Conclusions It is necessary to find proper forms of motivation of adults, mostly men, to participate in volunteering, as well as people with no experience of donating and participation in the work of social organizations.
