Importance This article presents a review of A.N. Bogdanov's monograph on the evolution of contemporary systems with dominating States.
Objectives The research provides a critical analysis of concepts concerning the system of international relations and its development after the end of the Cold War and in the foreseeable future, as presented in Bogdanov's monograph.
Methods The methodology includes some generally accepted methods of social sciences. For example, the contents of Bogdanov's book was analyzed using a discourse approach and the so called internal critics of the source.
Results The book overviews various alternatives to the future development of international relations, i.e. unipolar, hegemonic, imperial and bipolar models. Concurrently with structural factors, the author emphasizes such tools for legalizing and strengthening the dominance as the attractive nature of the hegemon's economic and political models, regulatory power, ideology, etc. The review presents some critical comments on Bogdanov's research. In particular, we doubt concerning a combination of various criteria to classify international systems with dominating actors. We also note that the author, in fact, ignores that the multipolar system of international relations may emerge, without apparently dominating powers.
Conclusions and Relevance Notwithstanding certain weaknesses and disputable issues, it goes without saying that the book represents scientific value. Bogdanov's monograph substantially contributes to the development of the national theory of international relations. The findings are applicable to scientific and educational milieu. For instance, our review indicates the monograph will be useful for those who study the theory of international relations, global security and contemporary international politics.
