Importance This article presents a modern analysis of the functioning of one of the key sectors of the Kirov oblast economy, namely the chemical industry. Objectives The article aims to study the current state of the chemical industry of the Kirov oblast, provide an expert identification of the main problems of its operation and develop its strategic development directions. Methods For the study, we used economic and statistical, expert methods, and the methods of PEST and SWOT analyses. Results Based on the results of PEST and SWOT analyses, the article identifies a number of issues affecting the long-term sustainable development of the chemical industry of the Kirov oblast, and it proposes the main areas of the industry's strategic development. Conclusions and Relevance The proposed main strategic directions for the Kirov chemical sector will enable the industry to maintain and develop its competitive advantage, provide an impetus for the development of the regional economy, and form unique competencies of the oblast. The results of the study can be used to develop a new version of the Strategy for Socio-Economic Development of the Kirov Oblast to 2030 program.
