Importance Risk management is an urgent issue for the modern economy, including enterprises operating in the defense industry complex of the Russian Federation. It is a tool to enhance sustainable development, efficiency of organizations, as well as the national defense capability. Objectives The study aims to identify specifics of risk management at the defense industry complex enterprises, considering the existing problems and requirements of industry standards, and to find an efficient solution. Methods The study employs traditional methods of scientific analysis, graphical modeling and process description. Results We underpin the need for risk management in the quality management system of enterprises of the defense industry complex, classify the risks, identify main areas where problems related to risk management should be solved. The paper formulates specific features of management of enterprises engaged in the military industrial sector using the risk-oriented approach. Conclusions The best option to implement the risk management concept is to integrate the requirements of two industry standards (GOST RV 0015-002-2012 System of Military Equipment Development and Launch into Production. Quality Management Systems. General Requirements and GOST R ISO 9001-2015 Quality Management Systems – Requirements) into the operations of enterprises of the sector.
