Importance The paper studies the uneven distribution of credit institutions among the regions of the Russian Federation.
Objectives In this work, I aim to evaluate and analyze the Russian regions' inequality in banking services provided by credit institutions operating in the given territory.
Methods In this study, I use calculation of the Herfindahl-Hirschman concentration indices, the weighted coefficients of variation, and the Gini, tabular and graphical analysis. For the purpose of comparative analysis, I compute deposits and loans for population per capita, as well as deposits and loans for legal entities to GRP.
Results I found a decrease in the Russian regions credit institution provision and change in the architecture of the banking system. I have also revealed the growth of profit and territory concentration in the banking system. Besides, I indicate a significant reduction in regional lending disparities over the period of 2001–2016.
Conclusions and Relevance The territory expansion of the federal level credit institutions to the Russian regions leads to their equal provision with banking services, lending primarily.

Keywords: banking system, unevenness, assets, convergence
