Importance This article reviews a monograph by K.V. Pavlov, Professor and Doctor of Economics, and illustrates that the author performed a thorough research into economic, social and environmental specifics of operations and development in old industrial regions under contemporary business conditions. Objectives Considering the importance of old industrial regions for the development of the Russian economy and many other economies, I analyze how the monograph substantiates the reasonableness of qualifying the economy and environment of the old industrial regions as a separate scientific aspects of regional studies. Methods The review is based on the content analysis of the text and presents statistical data and historical retrospect. Results The monograph examines the economic, social and environmental specifics of operations and development in old industrial regions under contemporary business conditions, determines forms and methods for enhancing the regional production, and identifies paths for improving business process management in old industrial regions. Conclusions and Relevance If economics and environment of old industrial regions are classified as a separate aspect of regional studies, it will intensify a comprehensive examination of the relevant regions, thereby increasing the efficiency of the Russian economy as a whole. The monograph is designated for teachers, post-graduate students, students and those who are interested in contemporary problems of the regional development of economic and environmental systems, and possible solutions.
