Importance The development of alternative energy technologies and energy efficient technologies is often perceived not only as something unnecessary in the Russian context, but also as a threat to the Russian economy.
Objectives The research devises methods of comprehensive analysis of the impact which new energy production technologies and energy-saving innovation may produce on the welfare of countries exporting energy resources.
Methods We propose a model of competition between countries in merchandise markets, where one country produces and exports energy resources, while the other one imports them but is capable of mastering the production process. Technological indicators in power engineering and other sectors are presented in the generalized format.
Results As the economic and mathematical analysis shows, innovation in the energy sector may increase the national well-being. We estimated probable national gains and losses if energy-saving technologies and affordable energy production lag in their development.
Conclusions and Relevance The development of energy-saving technologies and technologies for producing more affordable energy does not pose any threat to the Russian economy. Moreover, it may improve the competitiveness as the technologies alleviate the adverse effect of natural and climatic conditions, and increases economic sustainability as they reduce the percentage of exported energy resources in the national income.
