In the footsteps of extinct villages

Importance Due to a reduction and change in the composition of rural settlements in Russia and most of its subjects, the role of data sources retaining information about them is enormous. One of such sources is a monograph Villages of the Orel area. The reconstruction of historical pattern. 1566–2014, by A.Yu. Saran. It describes 10,873 rural settlements that existed in the territory of the Orel area for the entire period of its history within the borders of currently existing villages.
Objectives The aim of the article is to acquaint the reader with the structure and content of the monograph, which presents a historical encyclopedia of rural settlements of the Orel area.
Methods The article analyzes the content of the monograph, presents criticisms, determines the compliance of the information about rural settlements with national classification (All-Russian classifier of economic activities OK 029-2007 and all-Russian classifier of territories of municipal formations).
Results The monograph provides a reconstruction of the historical pattern of rural settlements of the Orel area from the 16th to 21st century and considers their typology. The Appendix to the monograph includes Historical encyclopedia of the Orel area villages with articles on rural settlements that have ever been mentioned in reference books.
Conclusions The monograph is of applied nature. It is a guide for everyone who conducts research in history, sociology, economics, and ecology of rural areas.
