Importance The article deals with the threats to legitimate power as an aspect of the comprehensive security of the Russian Federation. Objectives I examine the effect of key threats to Russia’s legitimate power on the comprehensive national security. For this purpose, I address a number of coherent research tasks following my concept of countering a clash of civilizations. Methods The research employs dialectical, historical-logic and historical-comparative methods, and specific-politological method (situational analysis, event analysis, expert assessment). Results I determine phases of legitimate power exposure to an external impact aimed at its coup d'etat. I demonstrate that Russia approximates the critical level of threat since political technologies target at the most vulnerable areas of socio-economic and political life. I substantiate that Russia’s economic dependence on the leading Western economies definitely has a detrimental effect on the comprehensive national security. The article outlines an algorithm for fueling a coup d'etat and finds methods for countering the legitimate power threats. Conclusions and Relevance Methods of the information warfare against Russia facilitate a gradual and intentional overthrow of legitimate power in any country. This situation necessitates an improvement in the comprehensive national security system and establishment of the Eurasian space led by Russia. The findings and conclusions can underlie general and special courses on political science, conflict studies, public administration and performance of governmental authorities.
