Importance The paper discusses the conditions and limitations of self-employment in a narrow rural labor market of the northern region, considering the financial straits of a quantity of families in the rural area of the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic as a case study.
Objectives The paper aims to determine the preconditions for and importance of the self-employment of the rural population. It purports to identify the territorial differences in unemployment, labor market tensions, show wage differentials in the branches of the economy and the impact of settlement location on the self-employment opportunities of the families interviewed.
Methods For the study, we used a systems analysis of the current territorial statistics and sociological survey materials.
Results The paper shows that the rural population is brought to get self-employed because of the high unemployment rate and traditional underpayment for agricultural labor. The labor market tension factor in the rural areas of the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic was 10 times higher than the average rate for the Republic in 2016.
Conclusions The main form of self-employment for the rural population, work in a personal farm, proceeds from the traditional methods of housekeeping in the north. The results of self-employment are aimed at providing for the needs of the family and are not only economic but also social.
