Subject The article analyzes evolution stages of the economic analysis as a scientific discipline, considering their influence on enhancing the informed decision-making in the business practice. Objectives The purpose of the study is to determine a role of economic analysis in building the integrated accounting and analytical knowledge-based system to achieve the level of economic entities to be adequate to the modern environment. Methods The study draws upon the historical method of research, the abstract-logical method, and the analysis of evolutionary stages of economic analysis in relation to the tasks faced by business entities during relevant periods of the national economy development. Results The findings show that the economic analysis as a scientific discipline was formed during the period of centrally planned and State-controlled economy. At each stage described in the research, the economic analysis provided a set of analytical tools in response to business entities' demands, considering the state-of-the-art data processing techniques, and the current status of economic, social, statistical, managerial, mathematical and other sciences. Conclusions Development of analytical methods and techniques opened up the possibility of an in-depth study of economic operations and contributed to the formation of the economic analysis as a scientific system of knowledge. If adapted to modern management problems, the theoretically substantiated approaches and proven techniques for identification, assessment and analysis of production reserves will provide domestic companies with substantial competitive advantages.
