Subject The article addresses methodological bases formation to monitor trends in the spatial and economic development of peripheral territories of agro-industrial regions in the South of Russia.
Objectives The study focuses on system diagnostics of the specifics of spatial and economic development of agro-industrial region (the Stavropol Krai) in the context of spatial and economic criteria, delimitation of territories of the near, middle and far periphery.
Methods The study draws on the systems approach, where a region is treated as the core-periphery system. I employ economic and statistical methods, cartographic analysis techniques, the Beauchamp index, the Bavelash index, and the Koenig number method to obtain results.
Results I demarcate the analytical features and spheres of application of spatial and spatial-economic analysis, form a block-structured system of characteristics and indicators of spatial economic analysis and, on this basis, monitor and diagnose current trends in the development of the Stavropol Krai being a typical representative of agro-industrial regions. Based on the combined use of methods for calculating the Beauchamp index, the Bavelash index, and the Koenig number, the paper identifies the near, middle, and far periphery of the region.
Conclusions The findings help identify a high level of centralization in the investigated region. The obtained results can be used by regional authorities and local self-government bodies to develop the sub-federal policy of socio-economic development, taking into account the spatial characteristics of agro-industrial type territories.
