Subject The article considers the environmental degradation problem, which is particularly relevant for residents of large industrial cities. In addition to industrial pollution, emissions from road transport and specifics of spatial distribution of emissions due to various climatic factors cause the air quality deterioration.
Objectives We aim to analyze the situation with air pollution in Russia and underpin the potential of nuclear power as a way of reducing pollutants discharge in regions of Siberia.
Methods We apply methods of logical and comparative analysis that rests on the comprehensive review of academic literature, analytical periodicals, and statistical information.
Results The paper shows that the problem of air pollution in Russia is unevenly distributed due to location of large industrial production. We highlight cities with the most difficult ecological situation, and analyze the structure of emissions by main polluting substance.
Conclusions The prospects for solving the problem of air pollution also relate to consideration of the possibility of transition from coal-fired power plants to more environmentally friendly ones. The paper substantiates that the nuclear power is the most promising type of power generation, as despite the alarmism, which is prevailing on the socio-political agenda, the daily and extraordinary risks inherent in developing this type of power are significantly exaggerated and offset by environmental and economic benefits.
