Specifics of peasant farms budget formation in the early 20th century: The Tver Governorate case study

Subject The article considers budgets of peasant farms for the purpose of a detailed analysis of economic and social problems faced by the largest social stratum of pre-revolutionary Russia. Being the economic basis of the autocratic regime, by 1917 the Russian peasants lost all political tolerance during quite a short period of time. Inefficient policy and palliative reforms were the main contributing factors in this process.
Objectives The aim of the paper is to consider peasant budgets as a quantitative evidence for the analysis of peasants' social and economic position during the period under investigation, rather than as a historical source.
Methods The study draws upon the analysis of historical data and systems approach.
Results The findings may be useful for historians, sociologists, managers and economists.
Conclusions and Relevance By the beginning of the 20th century, agriculture was no longer the Budget items for education and spiritual requirements were negligibly small. Extreme life conditions made peasants sensitive to economic crises and susceptible to revolutionary propaganda.
