Subject The article addresses the issues of supporting the development of the banking sector, particularly, the financial rehabilitation measures for credit institutions. The elaboration of bank resolution tools is aimed at financial recovery of problem banks and increasing their reliability.
Objectives The study aims to analyze the condition of the banking industry at the present stage, to give a qualitative evaluation of the impact of external factors on the stability of credit institutions. We focus on investigating the measures to prevent the insolvency of credit institutions, developing a plan of actions to strengthen the resource base of the banking sector’s organizations and improve their resolution mechanisms.
Methods The study rests on the methods of analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, statistical analysis, comparison and observation.
Results We revealed the main problems of credit institutions’ functioning in conditions of transformation of the banking infrastructure, i.e. the reduction of the number of participants operating in the banking sector, low level of liquidity and financial stability of commercial banks. The paper offers measures of operational and strategic nature to preserve the stability of credit institutions. It unveils the specifics of the relief to a financial institution by using the bail-in method.
Conclusions Crisis situations in the economy disclose a number of serious internal problems in the activities of credit institutions. The massive wave of bankruptcy of credit institutions by the results of 2015 and 2016 contributed to the adoption of measures to improve the quality of banking and financial management.
