Subject. The article is devoted to Russia’s participation in global value chains and international production in the first decades of the 21st century.
Objectives. The goal is to identify trends and experience in the development of the international sector of the Russian economy, mechanisms and reasons for its emergence and development.
Methods. The study rests on a combination of general scientific and special methods of scientific knowledge, like systems and functional-structural analysis, observation, classification, statistical methods, comparison, and generalization.
Results. Rapid dynamics and tangible results of international production enabled to accumulate valuable institutional and technological experience and establish interaction. Despite globalization and WTO membership, the mechanisms of such a production were not protected from political risks and influences, which in modern conditions obviously prevail over economic interests.
Conclusions. In the context of globalization and specifics of the Russian economy, international production cannot be replaced by “import substitution”. Therefore, when developing a new stage virtually from scratch, it is necessary to take into account the experience and lessons of the stage that has just been accomplished.

Keywords: global value chain, international production, mechanical engineering, import substitution, globalization
