Importance The article substantiates my methods for analyzing food security at the macro-regional economic level and its testing illustrated with the case studies of the regions in the Southern Federal District. Objectives The objective of the research is to devise a comprehensive and versatile method for analyzing the macro-regional food security. To reach the objective, I developed a set of food security indicators, determined evaluation criteria, built a model for analyzing and evaluating food security in the region at the macroeconomic level. Methods The proposed indicators and criteria for evaluating the regional food security were coordinated with those prescribed in the Food Security Doctrine of Russia, considering the WTO requirements. The proposed methods were tested with data on the economic position of the largest regions in the Southern Federal District, thus enabling to compare the level of the regions' food security from the spatial and temporary perspectives. The comparison was based on the integral evaluation of the regions' food security level. Results I produced a model that relied upon the versatile methods for evaluating food security at the macro-regional economic level. It has the comprehensive and versatile nature, thus allowing to perform a comparative analysis of the food security level throughout the regions of the country, and suggest corrective measures as part of the agricultural production policies, considering the WTO requirements. Conclusions and Relevance I present the methods for evaluating the regional food security and substantiate indicators and criteria of the region's food security assuming that Russia is a party to the WTO. The methods were tested on the basis of the food security indicators of the Southern Federal District.
