Importance Innovative activities will be driving progressive economic development of Russia within the coming decades. In this respect, it is reasonable to examine factors and conditions for setting up national innovation systems.
Objectives The research examines the scientific media market as a component of regional innovation systems. I make conceptual generalization of relevant ideas and examine them in combination with regional innovative systems in the South of Russia.
Methods I generalized concepts of regional innovative systems and scientific media market and formulated the conceptual basis for understanding how they correlate. Data on publishing activities of universities and innovative activities in the regions of the Russian South underlie a discussion of the theoretical assumption on that the scientific media market can be an important component of regional innovative systems.
Results I demonstrate that the scientific media market does constitute a component of regional innovative systems when the latter are closely related with administrative and geographical units. I point out communicative and analytical functions the scientific media market performs for driving innovative activities. Illustrating the case of the regions in the South of Russia, I identify a positive relation between the state of the scientific media market and innovative activities.
Conclusions and Relevance Russia has sufficient premises for joint development of regional scientific media markets and innovative systems. The findings of this research may be used to articulate a strategy for developing high education and science, and programs of regional innovative development.
