Importance Considering anti-Russian sanctions, food security gets more important since it is a part of the national economic security as a whole. Objectives The research investigates the concept of economic security as a whole and food security as a constituent of economic security and sets up criteria to evaluate food security. I also compare reasonable rate of consumption, production of basic products and food products per capita and determine the food security level per food product groups. Methods Relying upon statistical methods, I compared production, consumption of basic food products per capita, identified the supply of basic food products for the Russians and indicated the principal groups of imported food products. Results The article analyzes consumption rates of food products, indicates groups of products, which are insufficiently produced to meet the national demand, analyzes the import structure and proposes an approach to food security evaluation. Conclusions and Relevance The article proves the need to enhance food security, determines typical threats to economic security, reviews food security evaluation criteria in line with the Food Security Doctrine of the Russian Federation. I evaluated the food security of some groups of food products and found the most exported and imported groups of products. The country has insufficient stock of basic products, though the agricultural sector is capable of ensuring an adequate level of food security of the country.
