Importance The article presents our review of the monograph edited by M. Laruelle on the migration processes in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation.
Objectives We critically evaluate the author's conclusions on the social mobility patterns in the Arctic during the post-Soviet period.
Methods Our review is based on the discourse and source critique.
Results We find out that the book overviews three types of the social mobility in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation, i.e. social capital mobility, work in shifts and migration processes among smaller native peoples of the North. The book also examines a considerable change in the social, cultural and ethnic situation in urban areas of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation and the origination of the multicultural society in many cities of the Far North. The review also presents some critical comments.
Conclusions and Relevance The book may be informative for those working in science and education. In particular, the review mentions that the monograph is useful for those who study the contemporary history of the Russian Arctic and current social trends in the regions. Despite certain weaknesses and disputable statements, the book is undoubtedly significant, since it substantially contributes to the development of the global studies into the Arctic.
