Subject The article identifies undeniable reasons for the high voting turnaround and percentage of votes in the presidential elections. There is scarce research into federal elections from political perspectives of the national republics in the analyzable region.
Objectives The research examines the role of presidential elections in the political environment of the North Caucasus, and tries to locate possible controversial sentiment among voters, considering socio-economic and political developments.
Methods The article relies upon general methods of analysis, synthesis, induction, deduction, statistical method, systems and structural-functional approaches.
Results Referring to data of the Central Election Commission, I evaluate the protest voting seen in two presidential election campaigns (2012 and 2018) and the previous election campaign in the State Duma (2016). There is a risk that the political situation in the region may be destabilized if the vertical structure of power becomes less strict. The coherent formation of authorities in the region confers the significant power on federal authorities as part of the regional system of governance, including a possibility to directly influence electoral processes.
Conclusions and Relevance It is possible to emphasize the definite concord of the public on condition that there are no obvious conflicts and crisis trends. Loyal attitude is seen not only among the public, but also among the regional authorities. The president gains a lot of votes in the North Caucasus due to peoples’ high aptitude to act, deep respect for his national governance. The findings can be practically applied by public and municipal authorities and serve for developing general and special courses on political studies, conflict studies, studies of regional politics.
