Subject. This article discusses the issues of development of the innovative, technological and investment potential of Russia.
Objectives. The article aims to classify preferential terrain areas, analyze their status, and clarify the framework of categories and concepts.
Methods. For the study, we used logical and statistical analyses.
Results. The article summarizes theoretical approaches to determining the types of terrain areas with preferential conditions of functioning. The article finds that in modern conditions, preferential terrain areas turn to become a popular tool for ensuring economic growth of Russia and improving the investment attractiveness of the country's regions.
Conclusions. It is necessary to set up clear and uniform principles for the functioning of preferential terrain areas to include them in the general strategy of the country's spatial development. Further regulatory and legal design of preferential terrain area development and an in-depth analysis of the practices of their functioning are required.
