Importance The article studies the significant spatial differences in the Russian Federation regions' development, because the materials, which are intended to study their differentiation at the municipal level, are not sufficient enough. The research's particular feature is applied for the analysis of uneven spatial development of statistics at the level of municipalities and urban districts of the twelve regions of the Siberian Federal District.
Objectives Medium-sized and large-scale enterprises in the manufacturing industries serve as the target of research. The exploration period covers the 2010-2013 periods. The goal of the research is to analyze the concentration of manufacturing industries in the sector and to define the share of intra-regional disparities in the overall spatial inequality, as well as to perform testing of hypotheses of an impact at the labor productivity in the researched industry of the factors, which have been proposed by theory of new economic geography. The researched factors encompass the local market size, the availability of external markets, specialization levels and the economic diversification.
Methods In the research, I used the methods, which include a statistical indicators analysis, an assessment of econometric models. I used spatial concentration of production and employment estimated on the basis of the Theil index, which allows perform decomposition of inequality for various geographical levels.
Results We revealed that concentration of inter-municipal differences to special inequality considerably exceeds inequalities of inter-regional development of the Siberian regions. The estimation of econometric models showed that the factors of spatial differences are of market nature. The article identifies a positive correlation of labor productivity of manufacturing industries with the local market size, measured by the population density rate, market potential, and also the area specialization.
Conclusions and Relevance The obtained results facilitate better understanding of the mechanisms of economic activity concentration and comprehending of the current trends during the change of manufacturing locations and employment patterns.
