Importance The article studies the development of the Russian regions. The research uses a comprehensive approach to interpretation and assessment of the sustainability of regional systems' development. Objectives The paper aims to determine the development trends in the Russian regions on the basis of integral technique. Methods As methodological tools, we used a multivariate comparative analysis. For heterogeneous data standardization, we applied the Z-transform. Results We propose an integrated technique, based on the assessment of economic, environmental, socio-economic and socio-cultural subsystems in the region. The proposed methodology has been tested in regions of the Russian Federation. Conclusions and Relevance We determined that in order to harmonize the assessment and planning of regional development, and to compare the territories, identify the strengths and weaknesses, a complex integrated methodology of sustainability assessment can become an effective tool.
