Subject The subject of research is the economic activity that is desirable to be developed in the territory of a socio-economic priority development area. We consider the mono-industry City of Naberezhnye Chelny in the Republic of Tatarstan as a case study, since it went official a priority development area.
Objectives The paper aims to find the economic activities that the city residents consider the preferred ones.
Methods We conducted a survey among students of economic major courses of the Naberezhnye Chelny Institute on the Preferred Activities in the Priority Development Area of the City of Naberezhnye Chelny. We used two methods: a soft one, by distributing 100 percent of preference among the offered options; and a clear-answer one, by selecting only one option. We evaluated the arithmetic mean value of each option on both modes of survey separately. Additionally, we determined the opinion of the majority of respondents.
Results The paper shows the preference hierarchy of the surveyed.
Conclusions and Relevance From the point of view of inhabitants, production of technical equipment is the most preferable economic activity in the City of Naberezhnye Chelny. The results obtained can be used to bring to the market both investors and buyers.

Keywords: technical equipment, computers, software, pharmaceuticals, inbound tourism
