Importance The article makes the case for a universal, catching all the scientific approaches and theories classification of economic mechanisms, and the development of methodological formalized recommendations on forming an effective structure of economic mechanisms at all levels of public administration. Objectives The paper aims to improve the management of regional projects for the sustainable development of the Russian Federation regions. Methods For the study, we used a systems approach, methods of analysis and synthesis. Results We have analyzed the content of various scientific approaches to the formation of mechanisms in the economy. We have defined the properties of such mechanisms and now offer a classification of them and a certain approach to manage regional projects. Conclusions and Relevance The cybernetic approach helps to develop a mechanism of management of regional economies by providing the main links: management, information, resource; mechanism tools; control object. The development of formalized mechanisms gives the opportunity to distribute responsibility for the objective achievement, in accordance with the decision-making level of the management mechanism's structure. The received results can help to formalize the model of a management mechanism of different economic systems, in particular the development of the regional economy, where interregional, regional, and municipal projects are used as tools.
