Subject This article discusses the effectiveness of investing in the human capital of children in modern Russia.
Objectives The article aims to assess the volume and structure of household investments in the education of children within the age range of zero to ten.
Methods For the study, I used the methods of representative sociological survey and statistical analysis. The survey of parents having children aged zero to ten was conducted in Volgograd and the Volgograd Oblast.
Results The article shows that the average household of a typical region of Russia spends at least a quarter of all incomes on the education of a child aged zero to ten. The vast majority of parents do not consider such costs excessive and are willing to spend even more. In addition, households have also invested considerable time in the education of children. At the same time only half of parents count on economic return from such investments.
Conclusions The article reveals a strong desire of modern parents to give maximum possible education to their children. This aspiration does not correlate either with the educational level of the parents or with their income, which is indicative of the extra-economic motivation of household investments in education of children.
